Top Beaches Near Havana, Cuba

Havana might not immediately come to mind as an ideal location for beachgoers, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t some sandy spots nearby.

Far removed from the resort-lined beaches of Varadero, these local Cuban beaches boast reggaeton vibes with affordable fresh cuisine reminiscent of reggaeton music videos and Caribbean paradise charm.

Playa Bacuranao

Playa Bacuranao offers a relaxing environment for both locals and visitors, perfect for swimming and strolling along its white sands. There are also various independent stands selling drinks, fruits and snacks; offering visitors a refreshing beverage as they take in views of both city life and ocean scape.

This beach offers clean and well-kept sands with calm waters that make for an ideal family destination. Additionally, there are several places along its length where people can rent sun loungers or umbrellas while nearby restaurants serve delicious Cuban cuisine.

Rent kayaks to explore the surrounding waters or use the large grassy area for sports and other outdoor activities. Daytime on these beaches can be busy with locals as well as travelers; at nighttime though they tend to become quieter and more peaceful – not forgetting nearby attractions such as Castillo de la Real Fuerza or Malecon seawall!

Tarara Beach in Havana stands out as an outstanding beach due to its peaceful village-like atmosphere and abundance of natural beauty. Perfect for snorkelers and swimmers looking for respite from daily stressors; with pure blue water lapping against its white shores. Plus it provides an ideal space to spend quality time with family or alone!

Head out early in the morning for an ideal swim in its clean and crystal-clear water, suitable for swimmers of all ages – perfect for families. Relax under palm trees while walking or running along this relaxing shore, plus experience stunning sunset views!

The Necropolis Cristobal Colon is more than a cemetery; it’s an impressive shrine of ecclesial architecture. Boasting over 800,000 graves, it provides a stunning setting to explore and boasts some incredible tombs and memorials such as marble crucifixes, ornate mausoleums, and haunting murals – perfect for exploration!

Playa Tarara

Havana’s most beloved beach is easily the one closest to its core: Playa Larga is 3 kilometers long of golden sand that makes up its beachscape, with punto nauticos (small shops that rent chairs, umbrellas and sea kayaks) offering chair rentals along with sea kayak rental as well as iced drinks, water, snacks. Weekends and Cuban holidays tend to see this beach bustling with people.

Though its sand may not be as smooth, that hasn’t stopped people from flocking here. Most visitors come from La Habana to relax here on this beach for several hours and snorkel due to its clear water. There’s even an island that hosts a coral reef nearby!

Like other beaches in Cuba, make sure you bring plenty of sun protection and drink plenty of water in order to remain hydrated. Furthermore, it would be wise to avoid the peak hours from 11 am to 3 pm as these can be the hottest hours.

Playa El Salado may be farther from the city than its counterparts on this list, but it’s definitely worth exploring. Dubbed “Salty Beach” due to the abundance of salt present in its waters that’s good for skin health. Plus, this beach provides a quieter alternative.

Reach this beach via either the hop-on hop-off Havana Bus T3 tour trail, or local bus number 400 (known locally as “the guagua”). Travel should take roughly an hour and cost $5; casa particulares in the area offer temporary housing if you want to extend your visit for longer; it also serves as a good opportunity to see daily life on Cuba’s coastline with horse-drawn carriages, vendors selling fruits such as bananas and local foods as well as restaurants nearby.

Playa Santa Maria del Mar

Playa Santa Maria del Mar is one of the closest beaches to Havana and boasts many advantages. Families looking to build sandcastles or honeymooners seeking romantic sunset strolls alike will all find Playa Santa Maria del Mar an excellent spot, while its crystal clear waters make it ideal for underwater photography.

Playas del Este are located to the east of Havana and comprise part of an array of beaches known as Playas del Este. Although less spectacular than its neighbor, this beach still boasts its own charms if you enjoy beach going. Be sure to arrive early as these lovely stretches can fill quickly!

Guanabo Beach in Guanabo is off-the-beaten-path but offers a wonderful way to spend time at the beach. Boasting pure white sand and an inviting turquoise sea, this destination attracts families as well as snorkelers and divers. Additionally, there are food options nearby should you plan to spend more than an afternoon relaxing here.

This beach is part of the hop-on hop-off T3 tour trail through Old Havana and can be reached easily using bus, taxi or private transfers arranged through your hotel. If staying within city limits you could easily hop onto this tour bus to access this beach; otherwise taxi rides usually cost about $20 while private transfers can also be booked through hotels for you to reach it.

You don’t need to own a car in Cuba to visit its beaches; just rent one for your stay! Though I wouldn’t advise it unless you plan on staying for an extended period of time and can afford a rental car; otherwise I suggest taking taxi as it will likely be much less costly.

Playa Mi Cayito

Playa Mi Cayito offers an idyllic beach holiday for those in search of peace and serenity. Surrounded by dunes and coconut groves, its sandy shoreline creates an ambiance perfect for restful lounging and relaxation. Plus, with less vendors and tourists frequenting this spot, it makes an excellent place for a quieter visit.

Between Santa Maria del Mar and Guanabo lies this beautiful and relaxing beach, featuring shallow waters suitable for swimming and snorkeling. Additionally, this is also an ideal place for windsurfing enthusiasts of any level to come try their luck – be they novice or expert.

Kite surfing in Cuba is also popular here and many schools and companies provide lessons for both beginner and seasoned surfers alike.
